TAZARA Board prods management to do better

The TAZARA Board of Directors has urged the Management to apply more efforts in turning around the Authority so that it stands on its own. Meeting for the first time this year, at an Extra-Ordinary Board gathering in Dar es Salaam on 5th March 2016, the Directors observed that although there were positive indicators towards improving, the operational performance of TAZARA still remained unsustainably low, and directed the management to engage more customers in order to increase the volume of business. The Board noted that the Authority transported 44,945 tons of freight and 110,637 passengers in the second quarter (October – December 2015) as opposed to the approved targets of 50,000 tons and 137,502 passengers, respectively. The Board also noted that the Authority needed to enhance business development efforts in order to not only match with the current competitive environment, but also aim to attain the breakeven point. In that regard, the Board created a Business Development Committee of the Board of Directors to keep a close eye on management with a view to ensuring that there was more aggression in the development of business for the Authority. The board meeting was chaired by Eng. Dr Leonard Chamuriho, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Works and Supply of the United Republic of Tanzania, sitting together with his Zambian counterpart and Co-Chairman, Eng. Misheck Lungu, who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Zambia and four other board members from Tanzania and Zambia.
